塩ノ井（しおのい）
須佐神社境内にある「塩ノ井」は、古くより神聖な井戸として伝わります。伝承によれば、須佐能袁命（すさのおのみこと）がこの井戸の水を用いて土地を清められたとされ、稲佐の浜とも深くつながっています。井戸の水は潮の満ち引きの影響を受けて水量が増減し、かつては塩分が結晶して白い花のように見える「塩の花」が吹くことがありました。しかし、現在では地下水脈や環境の変化により、この現象はほとんど見られなくなっています。それでもなお、この井戸は地域の人々にとって神聖な場所として大切に守られ続けています。

Shio-no-I (Salt Well)
Within the grounds of Susa Shrine lies the sacred “Shio-no-I” well, revered since ancient times. According to tradition, the deity Susanoo-no-Mikoto used the water from this well to purify the land, and it is said to be deeply connected with Inasa Beach. The water level in the well fluctuates with the tides, and in the past, salt crystals would sometimes form on its surface, resembling delicate white flowers—known as “shio no hana” (salt flowers). However, due to changes in underground water channels and the environment, this phenomenon is now rarely seen. Even so, the well remains a cherished and sacred place for the local community.

About Susa Jinja Shrine

Susa Jinja Shrine is located in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture, and is dedicated to Susanoo-no-Mikoto, the god of storms and the sea in Japanese mythology. Its history spans over a thousand years, with origins dating back to the ancient Izumo no Kuni Fudoki (Chronicles of Izumo Province).

Susa Jinja Shrine is not just a place of worship but also serves as a sacred symbol connecting the land and its people. The main hall is built in the traditional Taisha-zukuri architectural style, and the surrounding grounds are enveloped in tranquility, offering a space for heartfelt worship.
