In June 1944, U.S. troops left Saltash Passage to depart for the D-Day landings in Normandy, France. Approximately 36,000 soldiers from the U.S. V and VII Corps boarded landing craft at a specially constructed slipway to embark on the invasion, which was the largest seaborne invasion in history. The troops traveled along local roads like Tamar Terrace and Vicarage Road, which were renamed Normandy Way and Normandy Hill, respectively.
