The James Bond craze reached its zenith in the mid-60s, with the small screen becoming flooded with Bond-inspired TV shows, such as The Man from U.N.C.L.E and I Spy. One such Bond-inspired series narrated the story of two Secret Service agents working from a private train AND garnered huge popularity. The Wild Wild West was unabashed in its treatment of the spy genre and filled the small screen with imaginative drama filled with action and romance.

The show was a Western espionage and science fiction show that introduced the audiences to the adventures of two secret agents -- James West, a former Union soldier and a full-time womanizer, and Artemus Gordon, a former conman excelling in the art of disguise. The two worked together to protect Ulysses Grant, the then-president of the United States. Michael Garrison, the creator of the show, conceived the two lead characters as 'James Bond on horsebacks' and with The Wild Wild West attempted to bring the James Bond craze that had completely taken over the big screen during the early 60s to the small screen.

Michael Garrison cast the incredibly handsome and talented Robert Conrad as James West. Conrad was an ex-boxer and therefore, performed almost all his action sequences on his own. In his waistcoat and skinny pants, Conrad exuded an irresistible charm, unmatched by any other TV star of the era. Artemus Gordon, on the other hand, was played by actor Ross Martin, who excelled at perfecting different characters. The camaraderie between the two lit up the screen every time they appeared on it together and they developed a friendship that would last until 1981 when Ross Martin breathed his last.

On the show, the duo's arch enemy was a man named Dr. Miguelito Loveless, a peevish megalomaniac, who often worked with the help of his two companions: the gigantic Voltaire and the beautiful Antoinette. Dr. Loveless would often use spy gimmicks typical of that time, such as miniature explosives and boot knives, as well as high-tech items, such as cyborgs, hallucinogen drugs, exoskeletons, robot squids, etc. to win the attention of his enemies. It was a mix of new techniques adopted from hit films and the charm associated old shows that made The Wild Wild West an audience favorite.
