Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) | Breathtaking Views in Norway 2025!

Preikestolen, also known as Pulpit Rock, is one of Norway’s most famous hikes, a massive natural rock platform that rises 600 meters (2000 ft) straight above the Lysefjorden.

From the top, you get a view so breathtaking it feels like you’re standing on the edge of the world.

Last week, Ilona and I hiked this legendary trail. It was a true mix of adventure and awe. The weather was on our side, clear skies and sunshine that made the fjord sparkle below.

Without the dogs this time, we could fully focus on the climb and the views. That said, if your dog is well-trained and used to rocky terrain, it’s definitely possible to bring them along, just make sure they’re on a leash and safe at the cliff edges.

BEST TIME to start: For fewer crowds and the most peaceful experience, begin your hike early in the morning, ideally before 8:00 AM. In summer, sunrise hikes are simply magical, with golden light spilling across the fjord. Late afternoon hikes can also be quieter, but remember to allow enough time to return before dark.

GETTING THERE: The hike starts at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge, about a 40-minute drive from Stavanger. From the lodge’s parking lot, the well-marked trail leads through pine forests, past small lakes, and across rocky plateaus before that dramatic cliff edge suddenly appears.

PREPARATION TIPS:

Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, the trail can be rocky and uneven.
Bring plenty of water and snacks, as there are no facilities along the way.
Check the weather forecast before you go, fog can block the view, and wet rocks can be slippery.
Dress in layers; even on sunny days, the wind at the top can be strong and chilly.

If hiking with a dog, bring extra water for them and watch their paws on the rocks.

Preikestolen is more than just a hike, it’s an unforgettable experience that rewards you with one of the most incredible views in all of Norway.
