Stray Kitten Follows a Passerby, Pretending to Have an Owner

On my way home from work, I saw a kitten in the middle of the road. It looked around, then lowered its head to sniff the ground, standing out starkly in the endless stream of cars. Whenever someone passed by, it would raise its tail and cautiously approach. If someone reached out, it would immediately move closer, its eyes filled with a hint of hope. But no one stopped for it, so it turned to follow the next passerby, keeping a tentative distance—as if playing a self-deceptive game, pretending it had an owner, pretending someone would soon take it home.
