This one was a little experimental, but I think it worked with the Thunderstorm. The Mad Mage was definitely a fun part of the campaign. I think the players encountered him three times before defeating and helping him.

The Mad Mage of Mount Baratok is a mysterious and tragic figure in the "Curse of Strahd" campaign, set within the gothic horror realm of Barovia. Once a powerful and respected wizard, the Mad Mage's real name has been lost to time, though some rumors suggest he might be Mordenkainen, a famous archmage from another world.
Years ago, the Mad Mage arrived in Barovia with a singular goal: to overthrow the tyrannical rule of Strahd von Zarovich, the dread vampire lord of the land. Gathering the courage and strength to face Strahd, the mage led an assault on Castle Ravenloft. However, Strahd's dark powers proved overwhelming. The battle ended disastrously, with the mage being cast from the heights of Tser Falls into the river below.
Miraculously, the mage survived but at a great cost. The traumatic defeat shattered his mind, leaving him a shadow of his former self. He retreated to the desolate and mist-shrouded slopes of Mount Baratok, where he wanders, raving madly and casting erratic spells. His once-great intellect is now fragmented, and he is haunted by paranoid delusions and fits of rage.
Despite his madness, the Mad Mage still retains a fraction of his formidable magical prowess. His unpredictable nature makes him both a potential ally and a significant threat to any who dare to approach him. Adventurers brave enough to seek him out may find a powerful, if unstable, source of aid against Strahd, or they may provoke his wrath and face the consequences.
Encounters with the Mad Mage offer a glimpse into the high stakes and dark themes of "Curse of Strahd," illustrating the perilous balance between hope and despair in the fight against evil. His story serves as a cautionary tale of the dangers of confronting immense power without adequate preparation and the tragic toll that such a confrontation can exact on even the mightiest of heroes.
