History of Zuljana

Zuljana was the loyal and brave horse of Imam Hussain (A.S.), who stood by him during the tragic event of Karbala (61 AH / 680 AD). According to historical narrations, Zuljana was a beautiful, strong, and intelligent horse. Some traditions state that it was a gift from Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to Imam Hussain (A.S.), while others say it was inherited from Imam Ali (A.S.).

On the day of Ashura, Zuljana carried Imam Hussain (A.S.) to the battlefield of Karbala. When Imam Hussain (A.S.) was martyred, Zuljana returned to the camp with its saddle soaked in blood. This sight informed the family members and women in the tents of the Imam’s martyrdom.

Zuljana is forever remembered as a symbol of loyalty, sacrifice, and bravery. In Muharram processions, a white, decorated, riderless horse is presented in remembrance of Zuljana, representing the love and devotion for this great companion of Karbala.
