10 Tips For Using Prismacolor Colored Pencils

This week i'm sharing 10 tips for using prismacolor colored pencils.
No messing around in this one, straight to the tips and these are 10 things you should definitely be doing with your prismacolor colored pencils.
I've dashed a bit of humor in there too, let me know if you like this style or if I should just shut up and get on with it.

Tip 10: You do not need the colorless blender to achieve smooth blending with your prismacolors. It can be useful for smoothing out certain colors which do not lay well together such as green but generally speaking, you can not bother with it.

Tip 9: use the right paper for your prismacolor colored pencils. There are a lot of different high quality papers which are great for using with prismacolor pencils but I highly recommend using strathmores toned tan paper. they go together perfectly.

Tip 8: Use the white to blend, this is a simple trick that can be used by both beginners and advanced users. once you have laid down your base colors, go over with the white pencil to smooth out the transition.

Tip 7: Use light pressure and lots of layers. Prismacolor colored pencils are delicate at the best of times, applying hard pressure will cause the leds to break constantly. Trust me when I say that prismacolor pencils do not need any help breaking the leds. It's almost like a feature at this point.

Tip 6: Go back over your linework after you've finished your coloring. Prismacolors are waxy, thick and will dull down your black linework. going back over it at the end really ties it all in together and is often overlooked.

Tip 5: prismacolors can be erased in a similar way to graphite, if you make a mistake or go over the edge you can lighten or potentially erase the mistake with a standard eraser. I like to use a tombo mono eraser for getting in tight areas.

Tip 4: Print off and fill out the prismacolor colored pencil chart for the set you are using. This serves as a color swatch and can be used as a reference when you are color picking for your drawing.

Tip 3: If your budget allows then definitely get the 150 set of prismacolors. This set contains a vast selection of different tones and will really help when you get more confident with the pencils.

Tip 2: Outline your drawings with a white border, it seperates your drawing from the background and really gives it that extra pop off the paper.

Tip1: Use a desktop sharpner, not a handheld one. Prismacolors are a pain to sharpen to a fine point without shattering the led into a million pieces. a desktop sharpener was an absolute revelation for me, I 100% recommend one.
