The TERRIFYING Truth Behind The Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash
Chances are, if you are listening to rock music, you have heard of Lynyrd Skynyrd. However, if you are one of the younger generations and you are not an avid fan of the band, you probably haven’t heard about October 20, 1977, when the band’s life abruptly ended. Little did anyone know the faith that was waiting for the young artists.
The pioneering Southern rock band had just released their fifth album, Street Survivors, on Oct. 17, following a string of hits. The new album went gold within days on the strength of its lead single, "What's Your Name," and Lynyrd Skynyrd embarked on a tour to promote the project, traveling between concert dates in their own Convair CV-300 twin-engine plane.
Three days later, on October 20th, 1977, tragedy struck the group when their chartered Convair began to run out of fuel at 6,000 feet en route to Baton Rouge. The plane’s crew, whom the National Transportation Safety Board would hold responsible for the accident in the accident report issued eight months later, radioed Houston air-traffic control as the plane lost altitude, asking for directions to the nearest airfield.
