moving pictures 🌿

I call this song "moving pictures" because the way the harmonies move remind me of so many classic movie score moments... that "movie magic" feeling. There is something so satisfying about triads gradually changing over a pedal bass... !! In more technical terms, here is the movement in the first four measures:
1 - D major triad (D, F#, A)
2 - D6 triad (D, F, B)
3 - D+ with a major 7th (D, F#, Bb*, C#)
4 - D major 7th (D, F#, A, C#)

technically this should be spelled using an A# in order to keep the original notes of the triad intact (i.e. any variation of a D triad should* only contain the notes D, F, and A and their alterations) but honestly I just "see" it as a Bb when I play (how I think about it my mind when my hand strikes the note on the piano) and I also just prefer to literally see a Bb on the written page in this instance, as well. Personal preference.

I almost wrote "can only contain" but that feels too stringent. Yes, it's important to learn the basic rules of music theory, but you'll quickly find that not everyone follows them haha so it's good to be able to notice and be flexible with discrepancies :)
