Wainhouse Tower has dominated the skyline of the Calder Valley since 1875. 150 years ago, its purpose was to be the chimney of the Washer Lane Dye Works. This was due to the need for chimneys to be much higher than normal due to smog pollution in Halifax. However, the chimney never was used for that purpose and is, instead, now the biggest folly in the world. JE Wainhouse himself would have climbed the 400 steps to the top to nosey on his Halifax business rivals.
The Tower is open occasionally throughout the year, but prebooked tickets are essential.
