I still maintain that I am the victim here. I truly believe that I didn’t do anything wrong—I just had the guts to say what everyone else was thinking.
I’m the kind of person who uses humor to get through life. I like to be bold. I like to be honest. So, when I sat at the breakfast table and looked at my daughter’s dark, thick curls—so different from my husband Evan’s straight, light hair—I made a joke. I said, "She must have gotten her hair from Caleb next door."
To me, it was just a flippant comment. A way to spice up a boring Tuesday morning while Evan droned on about electricity bills and daycare fees. I expected him to roll his eyes, maybe laugh nervously. I even told him he was being "insecure" and "paranoid" when he didn't find it funny. I accused him of being boring. I gaslit him into silence, thinking I had won the argument.
I thought I was untouchable because I was hiding the truth in plain sight.
But I underestimated Evan. I mistook his silence for weakness. While I was out in the front yard flirting with the neighbor and laughing with my friends about my "bold" jokes, Evan wasn't sulking. He was plotting. He wasn't going to therapy to "get over his insecurities"—he was going to a lab.
