MSC IRINA, World’s Largest Container Ship, Makes Historic Arrival at Vizhinjam Port

The MSC IRINA, recognized as the world’s largest container ship by TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) capacity, made its maiden visit to a South Asian port by docking at Vizhinjam International Seaport on June 9, 2025. This visit marks a significant milestone for Vizhinjam, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2, 2025.

Impressive Size and Capacity
Measuring 399.9 meters in length and 61.3 meters in width, MSC IRINA is nearly four times longer than a standard FIFA football field. It has the capacity to carry 24,346 TEUs, surpassing the previous largest container ship, OOCL Spain, by 150 TEUs. The vessel can stack containers up to 26 tiers high, showcasing its immense cargo-holding capability.

Enhancing Trade Between Asia and Europe
Designed specifically to transport large volumes of containers between Asia and Europe, MSC IRINA plays a crucial role in improving global trade routes and logistics efficiency. Its arrival at Vizhinjam highlights the port’s ability to handle Ultra-Large Container Vessels (ULCVs), boosting its status as a key maritime hub.
