In Hindustani classical music, Alaap is a slow, free-flowing, and rhythm-less introduction to a raga.
It helps express the raga’s mood and reveal its structure by gradually exploring the key notes.
Alaap is characterized by its non-metric nature, emotional depth, and improvisational style. It can be performed vocally or with instruments like sitar, sarod, or bansuri.
Typically, Alaap is followed by more rhythmic sections like Jor, Jhala, or Bandish, depending on the performance type.
