The government is pushing E20 fuel—20% ethanol blended with petrol—as a big step toward green energy. But on the ground, it looks more like a rushed, poorly planned experiment.

Ethanol production in India already strains food crops like sugarcane, leading to water overuse and higher food prices. Most vehicles aren’t even built to handle E20 safely—meaning lower mileage, engine damage, and bigger repair bills for ordinary people. Add to that poor supply chains and price manipulation, and the so-called “eco-friendly” fuel ends up hurting both consumers and the environment.
