"Blitzkrieg" – Most people immediately associate the term with Hitler and the tactic of launching a surprise and overwhelming attack on another country. When the Ramones released their debut single "Blitzkrieg Bop" in 1976, many assumed it referenced World War II, perhaps as a nod to the Jewish roots of some band members.
They're forming in a straight line
They're going through a tight wind
The kids are losing their minds
The Blitzkrieg Bop
As plausible as that may sound, the actual meaning of the song is quite different. In English, “bop” refers to a party where people dance a lot. A “Blitzkrieg Bop” is therefore more like a wild spectacle where people are joyfully partying – until, suddenly and unexpectedly, the mood flips and turns into its complete opposite – much like a blitzkrieg. Tommy Ramone once explained that the song was originally supposed to be called “Animal Hop”, but the more aggressive title was something Dee Dee came up with to give it that unmistakable Ramones edge.
Hey ho, let's go
Shoot 'em in the back now
What they want, I don't know
They're all revved up and ready to go
