Ratha Yatra, also known as the Festival of Chariots, is a significant Hindu festival celebrated primarily in the Indian city of Puri, Odisha. It is one of the oldest and grandest festivals in India and holds great religious and cultural importance. The festival is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, along with his siblings, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra.

The word "Ratha" means chariot, and "Yatra" means journey or procession. Ratha Yatra involves the ceremonial journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra in elaborately decorated chariots from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, located about 3 kilometers away. This symbolic journey represents the deities' annual visit to their aunt's house.

The main event of Ratha Yatra begins with the Snana Purnima, which is the ceremonial bathing of the deities. The deities are bathed with 108 pitchers of sacred water in a public ritual known as the Snana Yatra. After the bathing ritual, the deities remain in seclusion for about 15 days, during which they undergo special rituals and are not visible to devotees.

On the day of the Ratha Yatra, the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra are pulled by thousands of devotees using thick ropes. The chariots are massive structures, beautifully crafted and adorned with colorful fabric, flowers, and artwork. Each chariot has different dimensions and names. Lord Jagannath's chariot is called Nandighosa, Lord Balabhadra's chariot is called Taladhwaja, and Devi Subhadra's chariot is called Darpadalana.

Devotees enthusiastically participate in pulling the chariots, singing devotional songs, dancing, and chanting the names of the deities. It is believed that pulling the chariots during Ratha Yatra is highly auspicious and grants blessings and spiritual merit.

The procession moves through the streets of Puri, with millions of devotees gathering to catch a glimpse of the deities and seek their blessings. The atmosphere is filled with joy, devotion, and a sense of unity as people from different backgrounds come together to celebrate the festival.

After reaching the Gundicha Temple, the deities stay there for about a week, and devotees continue to offer their prayers and perform rituals. Finally, the return journey of the deities, known as Bahuda Yatra, takes place, and they are brought back to the Jagannath Temple.

Ratha Yatra is not only celebrated in Puri but also in various other parts of India and even in different countries around the world where there are significant Hindu communities. The festival serves as a powerful expression of devotion, unity, and the bond between devotees and their deities.
