A Brief History
Built between 1672 and 1695, the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. Constructed by the Spanish from coquina stone, it was designed to protect their New World settlement from pirates and rival European powers.
Over the centuries, the fort changed hands multiple times — Spanish, British, American, and even Confederate — each leaving its mark. Today, it stands as a National Monument, a symbol of endurance and history overlooking Matanzas Bay.
