The American Century came downbound on the St. Clair River heading to Monroe Michigan to complete their split load between St. Clair Powerplant and Monroe Power Plants.
Soon, these once common runs will come to a close following the closure of SMET in Duluth Minnesota. SMET, which stands for Superior Midwest Energy Terminal, is the largest and only supplier of Low-Sulfur coal. Low-Sulfur Coal is the only coal these Powerplants burn. This is because of the restrictions from High-Sulfur coal due to emission standards. Therefore these shipments of coal to powerplants we come to a close end of June, 2026.
However, this was long in the making even before the dock closure. Powerplants have been slowly transitioning into cheaper and less toxic fuels to burn. Mostly used now is Natural Gas.
Places such as Sandusky Ohio and Toledo Ohio do ship out other types of coal still. However, not the coal these power plants use. There are no current plans to shut these coal docks down. However, with coal being fazed out, it is not totally out of the picture.
