Birding Brazil's NE Atlantic Forest 4— Fourth and last of our 4 video series from our trip to Brazil in January 2017. With some incidental scenic photos from our August 2007 trip to Brazil.
Our "Cover Bird" and also Title Bird is a colorful Blue-naped Chlorophonia (16:59). It was photographed while we hiked in Parque Nacional Itatiaia. This park was a veritable birder's paradise!
MOST PHOTOGENIC AWARDS (in order of appearance) go to:
—Tropical Pewee at (06:08) is a gorgeous study in gray.
—The male White-headed Marsh Tyrant at (14:09) is perched artistically on rusted barbed-wire.
—Orange-eyed Thornbirds are featured starting at (17:29). Note this proudly plumaged specimen at (17:45).
Introducing two "NEW" Recognition Categories— Top SKULKERS and LOOKS MOST LIKE ITS NAME!
The Top 3 SKULKERS! (They tried to hide, but they were photographed!) Again, in order of appearance they are:
—Ochre-rumped Antbird (04:51)
—White-bibbed Antbird (09:13)
—Rufous-sided Crake (14:37)
It's always satisfying when we're able to "capture" an image of a SKULKER!
And winning the category for LOOKS MOST LIKE ITS NAME in this video is the White-shouldered Fire-eye at (17:29)! Rounds of applause for all of the winners!
Some bird species included in this video:
HUMMINGBIRDS—Green-crowned Plovercrest (00:09), Scale-throated Hermit (02:10), Violet-capped Woodnymph (07:03) and Swallow-tailed Hummingbird (20:38).
TANAGERS—Diademed (01:50, White-bellied (04:11), Olive-green (06:39), Burnished-buff (11:37)Fawn-breasted (16:50), Swallow (19:56) and Orange-headed (19:56).
BLACK-BANDED OWL—(03:30). After we left Carmo, we traveled through the rain to the city of Valença. Ricardo introduced us to the lady who knew just where this owl liked to hang out at the park. We also enjoyed some delicious frozen Açaí while there and met some nice military police officers. No worries, it was all friendly. Really.
STREAMER-TAILED TYRANTS—Starting at (10:35) we hope you'll enjoy this sequence with these very active and attractive birds.
LESSER YELLOW-HEADED VULTURE—(08:46) While this bird would never be called "cute," it definitely was striking.
ALSO making appearances—
Scaly-headed Parrot (12:29), a stylish Curl-crested Jay (15:56), Snail Kites beginning at (18:49) and a Rufous-thighed Kite (20:14). The Common Potoo didn't give us the best shot, but at least we got one (06:31).
Look for anhingas, spadebills, spinetails, finches, flycatchers, sparrows, tyrants, euphonias, tyrannulets and definitely more!
LAST BUT NOT LEAST BIRD for this video is a Black-crowned Night Heron taking a stroll at REGUA.
Not just birds:
MARMOSETS (02:42), BROWN CAPUCHINS (05:20), Green Iguana (20:29)
and a lovely photograph of the moon over Rio de Janeiro at the end of the video at (21:30).
Locations visited included REGUA—Reserva Ecológica Guapiaçu, Pousada Vale dos Sonhos, Barra do Piraí, Valença, Carmo, Duas Barras, Parque Nacional Itatiaia, Hotel do Ypê and some other interesting places.
Our time at REGUA went quickly. We highly recommend REGUA! Wonderful staff, excellent guides and comfortable accommodations. The food was great too!
Our guide for the balance of our trip, Ricardo, met and picked us up at REGUA. Ricardo knows birds AND he knows where to find them! Driving in Brazil is not for the faint of heart. Ricardo capably, safely and cheerfully drove us hither, thither and yon through the states of Rio de Janeiro and Bahia hunting down our target birds. He led us to other birds we didn't even know we wanted to photograph, but were so glad we did. Thank you Ricardo! We highly recommend him.
Equipment used was Canon 70D with a Canon EF100-400mm lens.
Tchau Brasil! We hope we get to visit again!
