The Southern summer is a brutal place to fish — scorching heat, relentless mosquitoes, and long, unforgiving days on the river. But every season, there’s one trip that stands apart. This is that adventure.

My friend B.J., Oklahoma’s state record holder for Blue Catfish, and I set out in my old yellow canoe for two nights chasing a giant summertime Catfish. The first night brought little reward, but when I pressed upriver alone, I discovered a massive hidden hole — the kind of place legends are born.

What followed was a wild battle with an unexpected 140-pound Alligator Gar, doubles on big Blue Catfish, and the kind of moments that remind me why I chase the river every summer. From camping on the banks to casting in the deep, this trip was one for the books.
