The relationship between Israel and Turkey, two major regional powers in the Middle East, is reaching a breaking point. Tensions have escalated, particularly due to Israel's airstrikes in Syria, which seem to target Turkish interests. Israel’s attacks on Syrian military sites, such as the T4 air base, are seen by Turkey as a direct challenge to its influence in the region, especially since Turkey has been actively supporting Syria’s territorial integrity.
Israel's strategy has shifted in recent years. The country, led by Prime Minister Netanyahu, has aggressively pursued its vision of a "Greater Israel," expanding its territory in Gaza, the West Bank, and southern Lebanon. This expansion also includes the Golan Heights, which became a strategic focus after the fall of Bashar al-Assad in Syria. Israel’s actions are not only aimed at solidifying its own control but also at destabilizing neighboring countries, including Syria, Jordan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.
Turkey, however, views Syria’s stability as essential for its own security. The two countries share a long border, and Turkey has long supported the opposition to Assad. Ankara’s main concern is that a fractured Syria would lead to increased terrorism, refugee crises, and destabilization, issues that directly impact Turkey’s internal security. Since Assad’s fall, Turkey has worked diplomatically to engage with Syria’s new leadership, aiming to keep the country unified. However, Israel’s ongoing military actions, like the strike on the Hama airbase, have complicated Turkey’s efforts.
In addition to Syria, Turkey’s foreign policy is deeply intertwined with the Palestinian cause. The ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, particularly the blockade of Gaza and the treatment of Palestinians, remains a core issue for Turkey. President Erdoğan has repeatedly condemned Israel's actions in Gaza and pledged to support Palestinian sovereignty, framing Turkey’s stance as a moral obligation. Turkey has provided significant aid to Gaza and has actively worked to raise global awareness, including pushing for Palestine's recognition at the United Nations.
The situation has become increasingly tense as Israel’s military strikes on Syrian sites, like the T4 airbase, directly challenge Turkey’s interests. Israel sees Turkey's growing influence in Syria as a threat to its regional dominance. However, Turkey is reluctant to escalate the conflict into an all-out war, recognizing the risks of provoking a larger confrontation, potentially involving the U.S. or NATO. Instead, Turkey is focusing on diplomacy, leveraging its relationship with the U.S. to prevent Israel from taking more aggressive actions.
The United States has been a key ally to Israel, but the U.S.'s own economic and political challenges are complicating its involvement. President Trump’s reluctance to fully support Netanyahu in his efforts against Turkey shows the shifting dynamics of the region. Turkey is betting that the U.S. will not allow Israel to push too far, especially given the pressure both countries are facing on other fronts.
Meanwhile, Israel is under increasing pressure domestically. Its economy is struggling, with a projected $400 billion in war costs, and its military is stretched thin, fighting on multiple fronts in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria. There are signs of internal dissent, with protests against Netanyahu’s leadership growing. Moreover, Europe, particularly France, has shown increasing support for Turkey’s position on Syria, further isolating Israel.
Syria is the flashpoint where the interests of Israel, Turkey, and other regional players intersect. The fate of Syria’s territorial integrity, along with the Palestinian cause, is at the heart of the tension between these two powers. While Israel continues its aggressive policies, it faces growing economic, military, and political vulnerabilities. Turkey, on the other hand, is holding firm, balancing diplomacy with a clear readiness to defend its interests, especially regarding Syria’s sovereignty and Palestine’s rights.
The situation is fragile, and the outcome of this conflict will have wide-reaching consequences for the Middle East. Turkey’s resolve to protect Syria’s unity and Palestine’s rights could lead to a broader regional conflict, or it may force a rethinking of strategies, depending on how the international community responds. This unfolding drama is far from over, and the world is watching closely to see how the conflict will evolve.
