2013 - 2017 Honda Accord CVT Transmission Fluid Change

How to change automatic transmission fluid of Honda Accord 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 sedan 4-cylinder that uses Honda HCF 2 transmission fluid. Honda recommends to Replace CVT transmission fluid of this vehicle every 50K miles (for Honda automatic transmission, and 30K for non-CVT vehicles that use Honda atf dw 1 or honda atf z1 fluid). Considering the long history of transmission problems in Honda and Acura vehicles, it is a good idea to change transmission fluid on schedule or even early vs having to deal with transmission problem, failure and full transmission replacement later.

At a Honda dealer the transmission service cost about $150 + tax for one drain & refill of fluid (not honda transmission flush). Complete transmission fluid replacement takes about 3 drain and refills so the expense adds up fast. Whether you do 3 drain & refills in one day or spread them over a few days/weeks, the process is SUPER EASY and can be done at home w/ basic tools.

HOW TO DO THE FLUID CHANGE:
1) Locate transmission fluid fill plug and drain bolt
2) Loosen drain bolt. Ensure its washer stays on it
3) Place drain pan under car. Remove the drain bolt
4) Open fill plug in engine area to expedite fluid drain
5) Drain bolt has magnet inside. Clean it w/ a rag
6) Put new washer on drain bolt and install it on vehicle
7) In drain pan measure quantity of fluid that came out
8) Add same quantity of new HCF-2 trans fluid to car
9) Install fill plug. Pour dirty trans fluid in the recycle container. You are done!

Keep car on level ground to drain out as much cvt hcf-2 fluid as possible. Honda has made it easy to do transmission service and access cvt fluid drain bolt from the front of the vehicle. If you want to get under the vehicle then put the vehicle on ramp or jack stands w/ correct load rating that can handle the weight of the vehicle.

RESULTS:
Amazing improvement in the upward & especially downward shift which is now very smooth.

WHY I CHANGED THE TRANSMISSION FLUID?
I bought this Accord used at about 45K+ miles and wasn't sure if original owner completed honda accord transmission service on schedule. As you see in the video, the fluid that came out of the transmission was dark brown color (vs light yellow color of new HCF2 fluid) and it smelled like burnt oil... so it definitely needed to be changed.

FLUID CHANGE INTERVAL
For years Honda automatic transmission fluid change interval was 30,000 miles, not sure why honda cvt transmission service was switched to 50K mile. Perhaps a way to show lower ‘cost of ownership’ to potential buyers? Considering the transmission fluid came out burnt, I plan to keep 30K mile (or under) change interval in the future. $40 extra expense in fluid is better than $4K for honda accord transmission replacement.

UPDATE in June 2023 :
This Accord now has about 142K miles and transmission works fantastic! I do one drain & fill every 15K miles which keeps fresh fluid in the vehicle.

IF YOU BOUGHT A USED ACCORD
If 100K+ miles and no record of honda cvt transmission service, space out drain & fills by 3000 miles or longer to ease transmission into new CVT HCF-2 fluid because new fluid has detergent qualities so we don't want to shock the transmission with 100% new fluid. Read up online about risks of changing fluid for the first time at high miles which may cause transmission failure. Evaluate your risk level before replacing the fluid.
