29th international scientific conference TRANSPORT MEANS 2025, 1-3 October, 2025, Klaipėda, Lithuania.
This report provides a brief analysis of the evolution of road design, with a closer look at the period from the introduction of computer technology to modern artificial intelligence systems. For the first time, it presents a periodisation of the introduction of computer technologies in highway design. The report draws conclusions regarding the modern capabilities of computer technologies in highway design, particularly in terms of road layout. Currently, the issue of developing and implementing optimisation algorithms for highway design remains unresolved. Since 2008, the author has identified this issue as a distinct area of research: computer-system (single-variant) design. In 2012, one solution proposed was to use the flexible bracelet method to design roads for horizontal highway alignment. This report examines one stage of implementing this method in the form of a computer program. For the first time, the report investigates computer modelling of the physical model of a flexible bracelet and the process of obtaining the coordinates of the middle of the bracelet segments.
