Engine Room UK takes the Trinidadian rhythm section or 'engine room' and makes dance music - house, techno, drum & bass and soca. This J'ouvert outing at Notting Hill Carnival in 2007 (as guests of Pepe Francis & Ebony Steelband) isn't typical, since the lineup includes several people not normally in the band and the rhythm is an ad-hoc carnival beat. Great to have 4 Trinis aboard the Positive Productions carnival truck - Sheldon Blackman (pan), Kent Clark (djembe), Tony and myself (iron). With 2 original Engine Room UK members, Oli Clarke (kit) and Rob Arcari (cowbells), plus Bolla & Nick.
Engine Room is a UK-based example of the T&T rhythm section genre, of which The Laventille Rhythm Section is the best, and certainly most famous example. I was very fortunate indeed to play iron with LRS for the T&T carnival season in 2003 as a relative novice and to produce a fire & rhythm show with them in The Hole, Laventille, filmed by a P.O.S police cameraman (!) with a great edit by Farmerfilmz
