STORYLINE:

Militiamen loyal to the militant Shiite cleric, Muqtada Al Sadr, faced off in a pitched battle against U.S. forces in Sadr City on Thursday evening.

Sadr City fighters fired RPGs at a U.S. patrol - and gunfire crackled through the night.

Muqtada Al Sadr has negotiated a ceasefire arrangement with the coalition forces in the holy Shiite city of Najaf - and his militiamen have begun heeding his call to withdraw from that city.

But the largely poor Shiite suburb of Baghdad - named after Muqtada's late father - has seen several intense battles over the past two weeks.

Elsewhere in the Iraqi capital on Thursday evening, a huge blast knocked out a portion of the wall at a cemetery in the largely Sunni area of Azimiyah.

Azimiyah is known to harbour its own insurgents who routinely launch mortars at the American base stationed within its boundaries.
