Blow Dry Curly Hair
This blow drying technique is specifically for smoothing out stronger curl pattern. This module will show you how to use well known techniques in different ways to successfully prep coily hair for a salon or runway up style.
Begin by brushing through the hair de-tangling any knots. Take a section from the top of the crow behind the ear and work up through the back and then through the sides and the top.
First, separate the top of the crown to behind the ear and then take a horizontal section at the nape of the neck. Start with a locking technique, smoothing out using our vest brush. Take the brush over top and blow-dry through from wet to dry. Do not pre dry the coily hair.
Blow-dry the hair with high heat. A nozzle helps direct the heat. Pull the hair, locking it through the root and to transition to an end lock. Take your time working very slowly.
When transitioning and if there's some hairs that the brush is not getting, use a carbon comb to create the tension and smooth out and set the hair. Use lots of tension and stretch the coil out to get it smooth and straight. Continue to transition and work upward and use a mixed bristle brush. The mixed bristle brush is going to compress the hair down more smooth, shinier and straighter. Take the brush by pulling and setting the hair from damp to dry. Locking it through and then combining the end putting it in through the heel of the brush and then low-drying down. While pressing the hair through using a nozzle to set those ends and doing a lock dry to get that hair compressed down and be very small.
The next session, use a mixed bristle round brushed which will give a similar result as the mix bristle brush. However, it allows to pull and stretch the hair a little more. Do a lock over top through the root and work to the mid to the ends of the hair, pull, press, and push the hair into the direction. Stretch the hair working from damp to dry to set the hair smooth and straight from its coiled pattern.
The final technique is called boxing the hair. Use a mixed bristle brush and go through setting it from wet to dry. Start with one side and then pull through creating lots of tension and using that blower with the nozzles to press the hair to straighten it from root all the way through the mid shaft towards the ends of the hair. Notice there's lots of space between the brush and the root. Do the underside by blow drying through smoothing that underside locking to straight the hair. After the side and the underside are done, move on to the top. Blow dry through from wet to dry setting the hair creating a boxed affect. Transition to the other side, smoothing is out, working from root all the way to the mid shaft. When completing this and getting to the ends, start to transition to a different brush to compress this down and set it and get that hair nice and straight and smooth. Now that the root to the mid is completed, it's time to work from the mid the ends. Do an end-lock either using a mixed bristle brush or a vest brushed to compress and really smooth and straighten the hair.
When transitioning to the sides, use a carbon comb, creating lots of tension, smoothing the hair out and making sure that its carbon so it doesn't melt. So we want to be very careful because we're using lots of heat here and so we want to make sure that the comb can support the blow drying technique. Follow some of the same techniques locking through the roots and then using the comb to smooth and finish the ends.
