I recommend traveling by bus. If in doubt, you can always go to the train station in Berchtesgaden and change there. The bus schedule cannot be adhered to in high season, so take the bus that arrives first and goes in that direction. You can get off at the Königssee (or Jennerbahn) stops.
P.S.
The lake is not yet visible at the Königssee stop ;-)
Show your guest card on the bus and you will get a free day ticket.
The lack of staff is most noticeable in high season; you can see it at the service staff and you should lower your expectations.
