Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) causes a significant global health burden, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. In a first-in-human clinical trial, led Imperial’s Dr Malick Gibani, healthy volunteers are being deliberately exposed to one of two different strains of NTS bacteria (a type of clinical study called a human challenge trial). His work aims to support vaccine development by deepening our understanding of NTS infection and answering fundamental questions about the immune response, including the identification of correlates of protection.
