Iron Mike DESTROYS Michael Spinks in 90 Seconds!

On this day - June 27th, 1988, The Baddest Man on the Planet, Mike Tyson (34-0) defeated Michael Spinks (31-0) by 1st round KO to defend his Undisputed Heavyweight Crown. Leading up to the bout, Tyson had unified 3 of boxing's 4 major sanctioning titles by beating Trevor Berbick for the WBC belt; James Smith for the WBA title: and Tony Tucker for the IBF strap. Spinks had previously held the IBF championship after beating Larry Holmes twice; but was stripped of his title for meeting Gerry Cooney. Already a rare Monday night fight, Tyson/Spinks also took on the allure of a 'lineal' world heavyweight fight. 'Once and For All' was billed as THE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE WORLD. The epic encounter transpired at the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall. The bout set records at the time for highest gross of $70M; Tyson's guaranteed purse of $25M: and Spinks' lesser purse of $13.5M, in 1988! Both fighters were featured in People, Ring Magazine, Sports Illustrated and Time. A Who's Who of celebrities attended the fight, including Warren Beatty, Billy Crystal, Jack Nicholson, Chuck Norris, Sean Penn, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, George Steinbrenner, Carl Weathers and Oprah Winfrey. Ringside tickets went for all-time highs of $1,500 USD a piece. Pundits generally favoured Tyson, who entered as a 4-1 betting favorite. Gil Clancy, Billy Conn, Gerry Cooney, Angelo Dundee, Dan Duva, George Foreman, Richie Giachetti and Jake LaMotta all predicted Tyson by KO. James Smith said the only way Spinks would win was to bring him in the ring as well. Muhammad Ali, Dave Anderson, Teddy Atlas, Don Dunphy, Marlon Starling, Bert Sugar and Tony Zale all predicted Spinks to win by easily out-boxing Tyson. Floyd Patterson waffled between picks, saying both would or could win. Rocky Graziano said Spinks would 'knock the hell out' of Tyson. 👑🐐🥊
