Buddhism once flourished in Central Asia, spreading through the Silk Road and influencing regions like Gandhara, Bamiyan, and beyond. Emperor Ashoka played a pivotal role in its expansion, sending missionaries, establishing stupas, and promoting Buddhist teachings. Over the centuries, Buddhist monks and scholars traveled across Central Asia, translating texts and shaping cultures from India to China. Grand monasteries, intricate sculptures, and towering statues, like the Bamiyan Buddhas, stood as testaments to Buddhism’s profound influence.
However, the 7th-century rise of Islam marked a turning point. As Islamic rule expanded, many Buddhist centers declined, temples were abandoned or repurposed, and the religion slowly faded from the region. By the 10th century, Buddhism had almost disappeared from Central Asia. The final blow came in 2001 when the Taliban destroyed the massive Bamiyan Buddhas, erasing an irreplaceable part of history. But why were these statues, symbols of peace, targeted? How did Buddhism, once so dominant, vanish from the region? And do any traces of its rich heritage still remain today? Join us as we explore the fascinating yet tragic journey of Buddhism in Central Asia—its rise, decline, and the echoes of its lost legacy.
