Layoffs at Mediatek?The semiconductor giant Mediatek turns 20 this year and has recently brought former Chunghwa Telecom chairman Rick Tsai on board as co-CEO. Reports are alleging that Tsai’s first responsibility will be to lay-off a large number of employees. Around 3,000 workers, those deemed to perform in the bottom 5 percent of the workforce, will allegedly be laid off in four-stages by the end of the year. Mediatek, however, stoutly denied the reports.Asus Shareholder’s MeetingAt the Asus shareholders’ meeting today, Asus chairman Jonney Shih addressed an announcement made last month about the company’s restructuring and its plan to add gaming computers to its business portfolio. The leadership at Asus has decided to implement changes in order to keep up with the changing industry. Shih also addressed shareholders’ concerns about lower than expected output in the first quarter, saying that the industry is currently going through many changes and that shareholders should give the company time (to adjust).Wowprime Shareholder’s MeetingWowprime Group founder Steve Day officially stepped down as a member of the board of directors at the company’s shareholder meeting today, which also approved a cash dividend payout of NT$3.5. Wowprime Group chairman Chen Cheng-hui also announced that the company will launch at least three new brands this year in an effort to revitalize the company.
