Your First LED and Flash Portraits | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

Studio-based portrait sessions (using flash) generally begin by working out how to eliminate all the room light from the scene. This is done either by adjusting the camera's exposure or by simply turning off the lights. But what if you need to capture some of that ambient light and mix it with flash?

In this tutorial photographer, Gavin Hoey shares some easy-to-use tips that will help you capture both LED continuous light and flash in a single image. There are no fancy Photoshop tricks here, it’s just a matter of getting the basics right in the camera.

Gavin starts by finding his preferred exposure for the relatively dim LED bulbs. Once that’s locked in he then finds the right exposure for the potentially much brighter flash. Finally, Gavin tackles the potentially tricky issue of finding the perfect white balance for the two different types of light.
