I wanted to see the Thailand that tourists almost never get to experience. So instead of heading to Bangkok or the usual touristy hotspots, I jumped on a plane to a place in the countryside called Udon Thani — a city right in the heart of Isaan. A place where tourists normally don't go to.
I wanted to see what a REAL city in Thailand looks and feels like - not the places that have been built for tourism.
Walking around, it quickly became clear… I might be the only tourist here. No tourist crowds, no flashy resorts — just everyday life in Thailand, far away from the places built for tourists.
But what does that actually look like? Is Udon Thani just another city, or is there something about Isaan that shows a different side of Thailand entirely? As a foreigner, it feels like stepping into a whole other world compared to Bangkok.
Let’s just say, this isn’t the Thailand most tourists know… and that’s exactly why I came here.
