We all know of the barbarous, blood-thirsty Bluebeard: he has been the subject countless retellings and adaptations - stories, poems, plays, films, operas - and these retellings span many many centuries. Bluebeard is a lasting cultural sensation. The question I’m interested in answering here today is: why? Why are we so obsessed with this man and the hell he creates for his helpless female victims? Is it the tension, the drama, the gore? Or is there something else at play? Something darkly relatable that sets our teeth on edge, and keeps us forever returning to the locked room and the horrors it conceals.
