Italy retained their world crown with a 3-1 victory (25-21, 25-17, 17-25, 25-10) over Bulgaria at the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship 2025 in Manila, Philippines, on Sunday (September 28).

In doing so, the Azzurri secured back-to-back titles for the first time since 1998 and claimed their fifth world crown.

The vibrant final was fiercely contested through three sets, with the Italians denying Bulgaria their first-ever gold medal in the world’s top competition.

The lead shifted between the teams during the first three sets before Italy pulled ahead with a one-point edge at 15-14.

Bulgaria stayed close in attack, but the Italians held firm and took the opening set.

The defending champions once again started slowly in the second set before accelerating in the closing stages, winning it by eight points.

Momentum swung back to Bulgaria, who opened up a two-point lead after a rally that ended in a 9-9 tie.

Bulgaria then scored five consecutive points to build a significant 15-10 advantage, which proved enough to fend off Italy’s comeback.

The Azzurri struck back with a vengeance in the fourth set.

They grabbed an early lead, stretched it to six points over the Bulgarians, and completely dominated the rest of the final.

Italy finished in emphatic style by scoring eight straight points to secure the world crown.

Yuri Romanò delivered an outstanding performance for Italy, contributing 22 points to his team’s victory, while Bulgarian star Aleksandar Nikolov topped the scoring chart with 23 points.
