This is the life-story of 100 strangers in their early adulthood who joined the medical school; Government Medical College, Kottayam, Kerala, India in the late 1990; surfed through the rough waters to reach their 5th decade of life. Over the years their friendship blossomed like water lily ( Kalharam in Malayalam) as the poet lays down, to become the epitome of camaraderie. We the batch of 1990 at the medical school proudly call ourselves MCK’90.
Punasangamam was penned based on this theme by our buddy; Dr Aqib K Shaick an Oncosurgeon in South Kerala. He has been honoured with several national and international awards for his collection of poems, ‘ The Musings of Stars and Dust’. His poem ‘ Pottamma’ written and picturised based on the Medical College Kottayam received critical acclaim. The poet touches upon the life after graduating from the medical school; the MCK’90 gets dispersed across the globe in search of greener pastures, building their career and serving humanity as doctors in various fields. This was also the period which brought out the talents hidden between the petals of the flower; we now have Poets, story writers, Dancers, Singers, Pilots, Skydivers, magicians to name a few; apart from being pioneers in the field of medicine.
The poet goes on to describe how age and loneliness go hand in glove. The thought of regrouping and getting together leads to small gatherings over years, stronger bonds formed thus paving the way for the ultimate reunion – The KOLAMASS 2025 ( Something extraordinary, Heroic). The Kolamass brought people from far and wide together on the 24th, 25th and 26th of October 2025 at Greenberg resorts , Kolamavu.
The lyrics portray the melancholy, happiness and ecstasy during the different phases of the life of MCK’90.
The song composed and sung by accomplished Carnatic music vocalist Dr G.S. Balamurali excels in conveying the different moods through 3 different ragas- Kalyanavasantham, Mohanam and Veenavadini. He is supported by Mrs Preetha P.V. as the female voice. The composition glides through all the moods portrayed by the poet with ease; a challenge the composer faced, as most of the songs carry only one mood- happines/ love/ sorrow; making it easier in choosing the raga.
Adding flavour to the song are the rendering on Flute – Mr Nikhil Aynoor, Veena- Ms Aditi Ramesh Iyer, Tabla- Mr P.K.Sunilkumar and Abhijith Sreedhar on Keyboard, sound recording and mixing.
Mr Justin Francis along with Mr Sajeesh Paul and Mr Vishnu N.K. have excelled in capturing the candid moments during the reunion on camera. The arduous task of editing, choosing the right moments and colour giving life to the song was carried out by Mr Nilesh M.B.
The song ends on a perfect note – “we will return”
