Right now in Uganda, powerful corporations are digging for oil, planting large scale crops like sugar cane, and setting up new factories. In the process, they are violently evicting local people from the land they call home. Their homes are being burnt to the ground and their human rights are being violated. It is estimated that 1 million women in Northern and Eastern Uganda will be displaced, or be at risk of displacement, by 2023.
In the face of forced evictions, a new movement of brave women is coming together to resist the land grab. Through legal support, training on women’s rights and a shared solidarity, women can fight to reclaim what is rightfully theirs.
Thanks to support from Womankind supporters and the UK Government through the UK Aid Match programme, we worked in partnership with National Association of Professional Environmentalists (NAPE) and National Association for Women’s Action in Development (NAWAD) to support women to reclaim their rights and rebuild their livelihoods through the POWER project.
Now that the project has completed, hear from the women of the Kijayo Camp Women's Group (Hoima District), Kigaaga Twimuke Women's Group (Hoima District) and Yago Pino Women's Group (Nwoya District) on creating localised alternative livelihoods.
