This video starts with a 28-carat Allawah crystal opal from Lightning Ridge — and from the very first look, I had a feeling there was something special hiding inside.

The Allawah field is one of the newer discoveries at Lightning Ridge and is famous for producing incredibly bright gem crystal opal. While this piece wasn’t destined to turn black, the color bar running through the thickest part of the stone had serious potential.

As I work the stone on the wheel, we uncover:

A strong, continuous color bar

Exceptionally bright Allawah color

A challenging sand inclusion that threatens weight and value

A tough decision between size, face, and perfection
