Unusual Giraffe Behavior Dominance Display or Mating Practice?

We observed unusual giraffe behavior and wondered if anyone can shed some light on it. We came across two giraffes that initially appeared to be about to mate, but it turned out to be a larger male attempting to mate with a smaller male. The larger male even ejaculated, after which the interaction escalated into what looked like play fighting. The smaller male tried to trip the larger one by lifting his back leg, and eventually, the larger male knocked the smaller one down with his front leg and even attempted to stamp on him. It didn’t seem overly aggressive, but we're unsure if this was practice, a dominance display, or something else. Could anyone explain this behavior
