This presentation discusses ICD-10-PCS medical coding for fusion procedures. Each of the 7 characters are discussed separately, with comparison of fusions of vertebrae and other joints.
These codes are reported using the body system characters for upper joints (R) and lower joints (S). The root operation is fusion (G). The body part values are for specific joints, such as vertebral joints. The approach may be open (0), percutaneous (3) or percutaneous endoscopic (4). There are many possible device values to choose from, including bone graft, interbody fusion device and internal fixation device. The 7th character qualifier for vertebral joints indicates which column is being treated and which approach is used.
Included is a discussion of coding for harvesting bone for a graft. Also discussed are Appendix G - Device key and aggregation table and Appendix H - Device definitions.
Different scenarios are presented with coding guidelines and examples for each.
