EP 3. Korean Treasures in the University of Cambridge - The Tale of General Im

The third episode of ‘Korean Treasures in the University of Cambridge’ explores a commercial woodblock print (banggakbon) of The Tale of General Im, acquired through Miss Lucy Nevile and now housed in the Cambridge University Library. Originally produced for public entertainment, this novel is based on the historical figure General Im Gyeongeop, who played a key role during the second Manchu invasion in 1636. Over time, the story has been adapted, altered, and shortened multiple times to reflect shifting social sentiments.

Marking the 80th anniversary of Korea’s Liberation, the Korean Cultural Centre UK and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the United Kingdom present a special documentary series that uncovers centuries-old Korean heritage at the University of Cambridge. Digitally restored and introduced to a global audience for the first time, these hidden treasures reveal a rich cultural exchange between Korea and the UK.

All featured treasures are now available in digitised form on the University of Cambridge Library website.
