Parvati Tirkey: The Sahitya Akademi winner preserving Kurukh culture through poetry | BBC News India

Thirty-one-year-old Parvati Tirkey from Jharkhand’s Kurukh (Oraon) tribe has won the 2025 Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar (for Hindi) for her poetry collection Phir Ugana. It is one of the country’s most prestigious awards for emerging authors. In a conversation with BBC’s Antariksh Jain from her remote hometown Gumla, she reflects on drawing inspiration from the stories and songs she grew up listening to in her community.

The video delves into how the Kurukh people pass on knowledge through oral traditions of folklore and song, and how Parvati is continuing that tradition through her poetry - an effort that bridges memory, heritage, and the written word.
