After a long drive and navigating dirt roads, the hike begins at a parking area, marked as the Yellowjacket Trail. The trail goes parallel to the mountains for 2.2 miles, before leaving it to go x-country to a gully up the side of Lockwood Peak. This certainly raises the difficulty rating a bit, since we all seem to be used to dealing with well maintained trails. Fortunately, there is the occasional rock cairn to keep you on track. The summit is not the highest peak in sight, but it does afford some nice views into Lockwood Valley and the San Emigdio Mountains.
