In August, a team made up of the Language Department and language partners traveled to the National Anthropological Archives at the Smithsonian in Washington DC to look at Comanche language records dating back to the early 1800s.
Language Department Director Dr. Kate Pewenofkit Briner’s Nʉmʉ Tekwa (Speak Comanche) Project was chosen to be funded by the Smithsonian’s Recovering Voices Program. The RV program funds selected tribal groups to come work with collections in the Smithsonian to help with revitalization projects at home.
The Language Department would like to say ʉra to the Recovering Voices Program because without their support this trip would not have been possible. Also, a big ʉra to the CN IT/media division for their support with this video and documentation of the trip.
In the following video, we share some of our experiences exploring the Comanche language materials going back to the early 1800s at the NAA.
Nahmaʔai tanʉ nʉmʉniwʉnʉ̠!
Let's all speak Comanche together!
