Mom looked at this prospective son-in-law, beaming from ear to ear. "Perfect match — you can tell they're made for each other!"
My boyfriend looked embarrassed. "If Anna finds out, that might not go over well, you know?"
My mother immediately snorted in disdain. "Anna ran away from home for eight years—who knows what she went through. I've heard the girls who were taken get... "
"You know what I mean. Auntie doesn't want you to regret it later, so listen to me. What, are you turning your nose up at our Emily?"
In front of everyone, my boyfriend dropped to one knee and slipped the engagement ring he had originally planned for me onto Emily's finger.
