Mercedes W123 key repair: a 2025 fix for a 1985 problem

The Mercedes Benx W123 platform is getting up there in age. Known for its bulletproof reliability, there was however one weakness: the key itself. The cheap plastic/rubber that Mercedes used was the only thing to actually hold the key to your keyring itself. The keyring does not loop through the blade itself, meaning that when the handle fails, the key falls off your keyring and is gone forever. If you are lucky, you still have the blade, and are forced to try and start your car with a stub of a key.

In this video, I show how I designed the two separate components I used: First a model key blade based off of measurements of the key I have, and second a handle for the key blade. I then show the process of inserting the key blade mid print, and finally test it out!
