There are very few Indian war correspondents who have actually accompanied the troops attacking a feature, right with the forward echelons of soldiers. The author is part of the limited breed that claims being baptised in war by enemy fire. His experiences range across the conflict spectrum to include counter insurgency and conventional operations in J&K and the mountainous terrain of Kargil, repectively.
In Kargil, he accompanied the attacking troops to their objectives, and in CI he spent his time with troops in all possible scenarios.
A war correspondent needs to use his discretion before reporting on information he has obtained by being often embedded among the troops. It’s when the curtains have come down and there are no implications in terms of breech of security, that he can pen down his story.
