Come along with Mark and Linda’s X Adventures as we explore two of Kaua‘i’s most breathtaking and accessible gems: the Wailua River Overlook and Opaekaa Falls. This scenic stop in the heart of Wailua is perfect for those looking to experience jaw-dropping views, ancient history, and local wildlife (yes, the wild chickens are back!)—all within a few minutes' walk from your car.
Our journey begins at the Wailua River Overlook, where we take in panoramic views of the only navigable river in all of Hawaii. From this easily reached lookout, you can watch kayakers glide peacefully down the wide, winding waterway framed by lush jungle and towering valley walls. If you’re lucky, you might spot a tour boat or paddlers making their way to Fern Grotto—a famous lava rock cave and traditional Hawaiian wedding site further upriver.
Just across the street, a short stroll brings you to Opaekaa Falls—one of Kaua‘i’s most iconic waterfalls. Cascading over 150 feet in two tiers, the falls tumble down a dramatic cliffside and into a hidden gorge below. It’s one of the few waterfalls in Hawaii you can admire from a paved overlook, making it perfect for travelers of all ages and accessibility levels. There’s a dedicated parking lot, clean public restrooms, and safety railings, so you can focus on soaking up the view.
Pro tip: the falls are not very close to the viewpoint, so bring a telephoto or zoom lens if you want detailed shots. But even from afar, the waterfall is absolutely worth the stop—especially after recent rain when the water flow is powerful and picturesque.
And of course, it wouldn’t be a true Kaua‘i experience without a run-in with some wild chickens. These feathery island icons are everywhere, and we caught some strutting confidently through the overlook like they were there to take in the view too.
Historical Insight:
Wailua wasn’t just chosen for its natural beauty—it was once the seat of royalty. The Wailua Valley was home to Hawaiian ali‘i (chiefs), sacred heiau (temples), and significant spiritual landmarks. The Wailua River itself was a vital transportation route in ancient times, used for fishing, farming, and ceremonial travel. Just upriver, you’ll find places like Poliahu Heiau and Hikinaakalā Heiau—stone temples that once played central roles in early Hawaiian society.
The name Opaekaa means “rolling shrimp,” named for the native freshwater shrimp that once tumbled over the falls during high flow. Though rare today, the name reminds us that this area is teeming with life, history, and the rhythm of the island.
