When Romania entered World War II on the Axis side in June 1941, joining Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union, the Romanian Air Force, known as the Forțele Aeriene Regale ale României or Royal Romanian Air Force, possessed a fascinating mixture of indigenous designs, foreign aircraft from multiple nations, and a cadre of skilled pilots ready to prove themselves in combat. Romania's strategic position in southeastern Europe, its valuable oil fields at Ploiești that fueled much of the German war machine, and its border with the Soviet Union made Romanian air power crucial to Axis operations in the eastern theater.
